His administration reportedly left substantial financial reserves and reduced the state's debt profile.
After leaving office, Obi served as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Transition Committee and became an influential voice on economic policy and good governance. In 2019, he was the Vice Presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) alongside Atiku Abubakar. In 2022, he joined the Labour Party (LP) and contested the 2023 Nigerian presidential election, where he gained widespread support, especially among young Nigerians, through a movement popularly known as the "Obidient Movement." His leadership style and reform-oriented approach have made him a significant figure in contemporary Nigerian politics.
H.E. Sen. Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (born 21 October 1956) is a Nigerian politician, engineer, and statesman who has played a major role in Nigeria's democratic governance. He was born in Kwankwaso village, Madobi Local Government Area of Kano State, into a respected family with deep roots in the community. Over the years, he has served in several important public offices, including Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Governor of Kano State, Minister of Defence, Senator representing Kano Central, and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Kwankwaso received his primary and secondary education in Kano State before studying Civil Engineering at Kaduna Polytechnic, where he specialized in water engineering. He later obtained a Master's degree in Water Engineering from Loughborough University of Technology, United Kingdom, and also earned a PhD in Water Engineering from Sharda University, India. Before entering politics, he worked for about 17 years with the Kano State Water Resources and Engineering Construction Agency, rising through the ranks as a professional engineer. He is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE).
His political career began in 1992 when he was elected to the House of Representatives under the Social Democratic Party (SDP). During the Third Republic, he served as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, becoming one of the youngest Nigerians to occupy that position.
Following Nigeria's return to democratic rule in 1999, Kwankwaso was elected Governor of Kano State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). After serving one term from 1999 to 2003, he was appointed Minister of Defence by President Olusegun Obasanjo, a position he held from 2003 to 2007. In 2011, he was re-elected Governor of Kano State for a second term, serving until 2015. His administration focused on education, healthcare, infrastructure development, urban renewal, and youth empowerment. One of his most notable achievements was sponsoring thousands of Kano students to study in universities within Nigeria and abroad, particularly in medicine, engineering, and other professional fields.
Kwankwaso also initiated numerous infrastructure projects, including roads, hospitals, schools, and housing estates. His leadership style led to the emergence of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, a socio-political movement symbolized by its distinctive red cap. The movement emphasizes education, social welfare, grassroots mobilization, youth empowerment, and inclusive governance, and has become one of the most influential political movements in northern Nigeria.
After completing his second tenure as governor, Kwankwaso was elected Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District, serving from 2015 to 2019. He has contested for the presidency of Nigeria on several occasions. In 2022, he joined the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and became its presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, where he maintained significant support, particularly in Kano State and other parts of northern Nigeria.
Throughout his public life, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has been recognized for his commitment to public service, educational development, infrastructure expansion, and grassroots politics. Although his political career has attracted both praise and criticism, he remains one of Nigeria's most influential political leaders and continues to play an active role in shaping the country's democratic process through the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
